Use the parishes as your geographic starting point. Detailed local guides will be added as Simple Jamaica Life grows.

PARISH 01

Kingston

  • Best for urban access: Kingston offers the island’s largest concentration of government offices, businesses, hospitals, universities, entertainment and specialised services.
  • Expect city traffic: Travel times can increase considerably during morning and evening commuting hours.
  • Housing costs vary: Prices depend heavily on the neighborhood, security, parking and proximity to major employment areas.
  • Transportation is widely available: Buses, route taxis and private taxis serve most areas, although routes and comfort levels vary.
  • Choose the neighborhood carefully: Visit during the day and at night, and check drainage, noise, security and access to everyday services.
PARISH 02

St. Andrew

  • Many different environments: St. Andrew includes busy commercial districts, established suburbs, hillside communities and rural mountain areas.
  • Popular residential areas can be costly: Proximity to Kingston’s employment, schools and services often increases rent and property prices.
  • Hillside living requires planning: Check road access, drainage, landslide risk, water pressure and internet availability.
  • Traffic depends on location: A short distance from Kingston can still involve a lengthy commute during peak hours.
  • Services are generally accessible: Shopping, healthcare, banking and entertainment are concentrated in the more developed southern areas.
PARISH 03

St. Thomas

  • Quieter and less developed: St. Thomas offers coastal and rural living within reach of Kingston, but services are more spread out.
  • Road improvements are changing travel: Confirm current routes and commuting times rather than relying on older information.
  • Morant Bay is the main service center: It provides shopping, banking, government services and transportation connections.
  • Check flood and drainage conditions: Heavy rain can affect low-lying roads, rivers and coastal communities.
  • Plan around fewer local options: Some specialised healthcare, employment and shopping may still require travel toward Kingston.
PARISH 04

Portland

  • Lush, scenic and rainy: Portland receives substantial rainfall, which supports its landscape but also affects roads, drainage and outdoor plans.
  • Port Antonio is the main center: It provides the parish’s greatest concentration of shopping, banking, healthcare and transportation.
  • Travel can be slow: Winding coastal and mountain roads make driving times longer than distances suggest.
  • Check utilities carefully: Internet, mobile reception, water pressure and power reliability can vary outside larger communities.
  • Expect a quieter lifestyle: Portland suits people who value nature and community more than nightlife or extensive commercial services.
PARISH 05

St. Mary

  • Mostly rural and agricultural: St. Mary is known for farming communities, green hills and a quieter pace than major resort areas.
  • Port Maria is the parish capital: It provides government offices, shopping, banking and basic services.
  • Communities can be spread out: Owning a vehicle or understanding local transportation routes may be important.
  • Inspect rural access: Check road quality, drainage, water storage and mobile coverage before choosing a property.
  • North-coast access varies: Areas closer to major roads provide easier connections to Ocho Rios and other commercial centers.
PARISH 06

St. Ann

  • A mix of tourism and country living: St. Ann includes busy Ocho Rios, coastal communities, farming areas and cooler inland hills.
  • Ocho Rios has extensive services: Shopping, restaurants, healthcare, transportation and employment are readily available but can cost more.
  • Tourist traffic affects travel: Cruise-ship days and peak visitor periods can create congestion around major attractions.
  • Inland communities can be quieter: Check transportation, internet, water and road conditions before moving away from the coast.
  • Housing prices vary considerably: Ocean views, gated developments and proximity to Ocho Rios generally command higher prices.
PARISH 07

Trelawny

  • Falmouth is the main town: It provides shopping, banking, government services and access to the north-coast highway.
  • Coastal development is growing: New housing and tourism activity are changing communities near Falmouth and the highway.
  • Interior areas are more rural: Communities near the Cockpit Country may have narrower roads and fewer nearby services.
  • Transportation access matters: Check commuting time to Montego Bay, schools, healthcare and major shopping.
  • Investigate water and drainage: Conditions can differ substantially between coastal, low-lying and inland properties.
PARISH 08

St. James

  • Montego Bay is a major center: It offers an international airport, hospitals, shopping, employment, entertainment and extensive transportation.
  • Living costs can be higher: Rent, property and services often cost more in tourist districts, gated communities and areas near the coast.
  • Traffic is a daily consideration: Airport, hotel and commuter traffic can slow movement through Montego Bay.
  • Neighborhoods vary sharply: Compare security, road access, water supply, noise and proximity to services before choosing an area.
  • Rural options are nearby: Communities outside Montego Bay may offer more space and lower costs but require longer travel for services.
PARISH 09

Hanover

  • Small and relatively quiet: Hanover offers coastal and rural communities between the larger tourism centers of Montego Bay and Negril.
  • Lucea is the parish capital: It provides local shopping, banking, transportation and government services.
  • Many residents travel for major services: Specialised healthcare, employment and larger shopping trips may require visiting another parish.
  • Check commuting routes: Coastal traffic and road conditions can affect travel toward Montego Bay or Negril.
  • Rural properties need careful inspection: Confirm water storage, road access, internet coverage, drainage and transportation availability.
PARISH 10

Westmoreland

  • Tourism and agriculture coexist: Negril’s visitor economy differs considerably from the farming and commercial communities elsewhere in the parish.
  • Savanna-la-Mar is the main service center: It provides shopping, banking, healthcare, government offices and transportation.
  • Negril can be expensive: Housing and everyday purchases near the tourism corridor may cost more than in inland communities.
  • Low-lying areas require drainage checks: Heavy rain can create flooding and road problems in vulnerable locations.
  • Transportation becomes limited outside towns: Plan return trips carefully and confirm route-taxi availability before choosing a rural area.
PARISH 11

St. Elizabeth

  • Agriculture shapes daily life: St. Elizabeth is known for farming, fishing and widely separated rural communities.
  • Black River is the parish capital: It provides government services, shopping, banking and transportation connections.
  • Treasure Beach offers a different coastal experience: It is quieter than major resort towns but has fewer large commercial services.
  • A vehicle can be valuable: Long distances between communities make transportation planning especially important.
  • Check water availability: Some areas are relatively dry, making tanks, pumps and responsible water storage important household considerations.
PARISH 12

Manchester

  • Cooler highland climate: Mandeville and surrounding hills are generally cooler than Jamaica’s coastal lowlands.
  • Mandeville is a major inland center: It provides hospitals, schools, shopping, banking, restaurants and professional services.
  • Hilly terrain affects property access: Inspect steep driveways, drainage, retaining walls and road conditions.
  • Housing ranges from urban to rural: Services and transportation become less convenient farther from Mandeville.
  • Plan for rain and fog: Higher elevations can experience reduced visibility, damp conditions and cooler evenings.
PARISH 13

Clarendon

  • Central location: Clarendon provides road connections to Kingston, the south coast and western Jamaica.
  • May Pen is the commercial center: It offers shopping, banking, transportation, healthcare and government services.
  • The parish includes varied landscapes: Industrial, agricultural, mountain and coastal communities have very different living conditions.
  • Expect heat in low-lying areas: Ventilation, shade and electricity costs should be considered when inspecting a home.
  • Check flood and road conditions: Heavy rain can affect rivers, drainage systems, low-lying communities and rural roads.
PARISH 14

St. Catherine

  • A major commuter parish: Many residents travel between Portmore, Spanish Town and Kingston for employment and services.
  • Portmore offers extensive development: Housing, shopping and transportation are widely available, but traffic and heat are important considerations.
  • Spanish Town has history and busy commerce: Neighborhood conditions, traffic and security vary significantly across the area.
  • Commutes can be demanding: Check peak-hour travel times, toll costs and transportation options before choosing a community.
  • Conditions vary inland: Rural and hillside areas may offer more space but require closer attention to roads, water, internet and emergency access.
